I think Diigo is an invaluable asset for teaching and teachers - setting up educational groups and then adding notations to different webpages - either those by experts or other students is one of the best learning tools ever. Used to use Evernot...

I am using diigo heavily. The ability to highlight and annotate puts it a notch above the other social bookmarking tools in my book. I'm also using Evernote for bookmarking stuff from the non-virtual world. Its OCR functionality makes it terrific...

Hi Sharon. Good to hear from you -- always nice to meet a BG alum.

I agree about the utility of more "in your face" tools. I find that setting up rss feeds to aggregate stuff from the networks I've joined and the blogs and sites I like is well worth the effort. (I think "skimming" might be the most important 21st century skill nobody is talking about.) I've started playing around with Yahoo Pipes a little bit to see if I can come up with an optimally broad-but-filtered portal that suits my needs. Will let you know how that works out!

Application was submitted at end of June with Memphis. Hopefully it will get funded so I have a chance to work with Cliff Mims. We won't know until March if they get funded. It's a long shot to get anything funded by IES, but the theory and background is solid in both, so I'm hopeful.

Good luck with your PD with principals. I would be sure to discuss two things:
How principals can share pertinent links/resources/advice/strategies via a networking.
Show how teachers can engage students through social networking that can be both rigorous and interesting.

Indeed. Today is too nice to be online. I'm teaching this week and will be using this as a sample ning.

Sharon it's interesting that you send this out. I know you are trying to start some conversations, but I'm in the middle of designing an RFA for IES. Our currnet proposal is around teacher development, technology integration. It's not a randomized control, but must contain an iterative improvement process with research evaluation. I would love to brainstorm some ideas later as we get the proposal going. If you are interested let me know.

Hi Sharon,
Sorry it took so long to respond. In response to your questions, my involvement in PD has been:

Writing manuals to help teachers with planning and implementing new state priorities (under contract with the Ohio Dept. of Ed and other state agencies). One of my projects was a book defining Quality Professional Development and providing ideas for making it happen. The book captured a multi-year dialogue among teachers from around the state, as well as my research outside education. In this project, I saw exciting but unrealized possibilities for teacher learning that I think are still not happening in many schools but are beginning to emerge on the Web. I've also written guides for literacy teams, planning teams, and teams seeking to address diverse student needs. (Some are mentioned on my web site).

I've just finished a project working with teams of arts educators on lesson design. It was a very rich learning experience for them and me. I would really like to do more of that type of work in the future.

I have always been an avid learner. I call myself a creative generalist because I don't like to read and learn broadly and make interesting connections.

I hope you will check out artfulinnovation.blogspot.com sometime. Thanks.

You asked me regarding my involvement in Professional Development. I finally had time to compose and post my response. It took me longer to get to this than I thought.

I teach middle school full time. My work with Professional Development happens either after school or on days off.

I am my district's Science Specialist. I coordinate a Content Specific Professional Development day once a year. We bring in specialists and/or train each other during this day. It has been a lot of work.

I am a Senior Trainer for the Intel(R) Teach program. During the summers, I help train teachers in the concepts of this program (e.g. Essential Questions, Collaboration, Web 2.0 Tools, etc.) The teachers I train become Master Teachers (which I have been in my district since 2001). A Master Teacher then trains other teachers in their district (usually 10 teachers.) This is a train the trainer course.

Since 1997, I have been the facilitator for Utah's Sci-ber Text project. In this project, I get teachers at individual grade levels together. These teachers review our state Science core and determine appropriate text and activities for students to do relating to the core. Their work is posted online as Sci-ber Text (an online textbook.) Our state science core is designed to "not follow any textbook" in grades 3-9. The focus teachers are instructed to follow is to get children involved in doing and experiencing science. I help these teachers learn how they can use technology in their classes, how to write their material to go online, and finally to act as "webmaster" in combining all written work as linked web pages.

A small PD that I am involved with is helping Utah Elementary Teachers learn how matter and water cycle on Earth. This is taught at almost a college level (so they are comfortable with all they teach in the classroom.)

Sharon, thanks so much for your offer of support. As it turns out I did design a Ning space where my volunteer writers could come together. We're still testing the site and don't yet know for example whether a document edited with the Word "review" toolbar will travel from one group member to another with its editations left intact. If so, we're in good shape as the Ning groups (of two -- author and editor) will become the primary means of communication for the Writers Group; and I can then hope that since they have reason to keep returning to the site, at least some of them will begin to be drawn together and feel like a team.

Do you get as much online as in person

I am involved in Electronic Village Online these next 6 weeks. The participants are from around the world and I find it an exciting experience. Just wondering if you feel you can get as much from an online experience as from f2f? Does every PD need some f2f?

Putting together PD

I seem to have become bogged down with PD presentations - could use some input from all of you.
What is your favorite "tool" for your personal learning network? and Why?

Do you find yourself loosing interest in using social networks? have they become cumbersome?

What about twitter?

Any other input on PLN's is appreciated.
